"My connection with Armenia began in the late 1990s, when I met a young Armenian orthopedist, Haik, during his visit to San Francisco. I was struck immediately by his sincerity and the depth of his ambition. In 1999, Haik, his wife Anna — an ophthalmologist — and their two children came to live with my wife and me for a year so they could study in the United States. It was a wonderful year, full of discovery. Our evening conversations often stretched past midnight, fueled by their burning desire to excel as physicians, to transform medical care in Armenia, and to change the future for generations of Armenians to come. Both Haik and Anna went on to become pioneers in their fields, and our work together in Armenia has continued ever since. Over the years, I came to understand that their intensity and drive were not unique — they were the defining characteristics of Armenian healthcare providers as a whole. The mission of ARC is simple: to give these providers the resources they need to reach their full potential and, in doing so, to build a brighter future for the Armenian people."
